November 2008

Well, things are a perkulatin’ now, aint they? Pres-Elect Obama has begun to choose his posse, Emanuel and Axelrod so far. I do hope that he’ll chose a titan of finance such as Paul Volker for Sec of Treas: even if he serves but a year, the prestige and comprehensive knowledge he will bring to the position would be well worth it.

On the flip side, the GOP is a goin’ after the Wasilla hillbillies…seems that the rethugs wanted to buy the Barbie…accessories not included. Just like parents all across the country, they fell for the marketing. The “Doll” was cheap……but they never agreed to buy all of those OUTFITS! And now it turns out that the 150K price tag was just the tip of the iceberg!

Let’s see. Barbie didn’t know that Africa was a CONTINENT, not a country, she couldn’t name the countries in North America, or, by extrapolation, in NAFTA. Barbie refused to submit to “prep” before the Couric interviews, and she let loose with the Ayers smears before that tactic was signed off by McCain.

The world is pretty amazing, and the fallout from this campaign season is almost as much fun to watch as the campaign itself. Unfortunately, there’s no campaign work to do for ME at this point, but I am enjoying the season, as well as being part of the blogosphere with all of of you.

And that brings me to another Poll:

The extraordinary political climate that is developing in this country bears watching, bears documentation, and simply begs to be documented in the blogosphere. This blog had it’s genesis in the tumultuous campaign of the 2008 Presidential election. In the coming months, we’ll follow the political environment as best we can, and try to report on the issues that seem to be resonating with the country.

And, since it hasn’t yet been done on this blog, let me offer my HEARTIEST congratulations to Barack Obama and his campaign (of which i can happily say I have been a small part).

Congratulations Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th President-Elect of the United States of America!!!!

Let the cynics sleep. Let them discount the magnitude of the moment. Let them deny the righteousness of the cause. It does not matter. They are small in mind, and do not deserve to share in it if they do not succumb to it. -Amb. Marc Ginsberg

I do not have words to describe how I’m feeling. The kids have gone to bed. The dogs are in their crates (one is yapping, but it is meaningless at this point). I sit here watching Chris Jansing (an old classmate of mine) on MSNBC with Doris Kearns . Barack Obama won. Not only did he win, but he won a HUGE mandate. Not a landslide. A TSUNAMI. The feeling is quite indescribable.

I’m proud of my country. Yes, I’m going to say it. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ADULT LIFE, I AM TRULY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. I was proud to be an American when we landed the first manned spacecraft on the moon. That was different. More pride in humanity, in it’s accomplishments. I am truly, truly proud to be an American this morning. Perhaps because I worked so hard on his campaign (not as hard as my mom, mind you, but that is another blog entry), the Obama victory is truly personal. Perhaps because, as Colin Powell said so eloquently, he IS a transformative candidate…transformative in both the national, and global sense. This man is the single most brilliant statesman to be elected President of the United States since John F. Kennedy, and truly reminds most of us of that fine man. But there’s more. The Barack Obama story is one that truly, truly could not have played itself out in any nation in the world other than the United States of America. The idea that, from humble beginnings, this man could have risen to claim the most powerful office in the land is truly remarkable. Doris Kearns Goodwin thinks that this will be bigger than we know.

I agree.

President-Elect Obama, the 44th President of the United States.

Thanks, Tim.

Indiana O leads a couple of percentage points, with not much vote in. I have to admit, this is the most fun I’ve had in a long time, and I do hope it ends well for Barack. However, I AM proud of the turnout here in the USA, and incredibly proud that I have had, in a very small way, something to do with that as an Obama campaign volunteer.

More coming….

And I’m biting my nails….down to my shoulder. Despite all of my geekification, I’m still woefully uninformed. I’m keeping it on MSNBC, tho….can’t do that channel switching biz. At the same time as I’m working here, I’m liveblogging with Bob Cesca over at HuffPo….well, actually HE’s liveblogging, I’m commenting, and sometimes he posts my comments.

Hi all,

Well, the first thing I did after blogging all night on HuffPo and Kos (no frappin’ way I could sleep) was to drop my kids off at school and jet to the polling place. The wait, here in Northern Michigan, was not too bad….30 minutes waiting, and then doing the voting thing. Yes, I made a mistake, picked 2 in the “Vote for only one” column. Back to the ballot lady to get a new one. Wonder of wonders, filled it out right this time. Scanned it in. Geez, I hope that scanner was not one of the Michigan scanners that, when tested, failed to scan the same ballot the same way 5 times. Well, since we can’t get a paper ballot here, or a receipt, that’s that. I headed off to the Obama headquarters to meet with my canvassing partner, and from 9am to 3pm we canvassed, and canvassed, and GOT OUT THE VOTE. Felt great, and I reall think it was a great way to be involved in the campaign.

Back home, I’m now set up in “Election Central”. On the big screen, I have MSNBC. NO, I won’t watch CNN. On my MacBook Pro, I have the following sites set up:

Bob Cesca’s LiveBlog on HuffPo
Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight
The Daily Kos Electoral Scoreboard
HuffPo Election Widgets

On the PC beside me, with a screen that my kids can see as well:

The Daily Kos Electoral Scoreboard

I also have pen, paper, highlighter, beer (Boulder Beer Hazed and Infused, and Michigan Brewing Co. Porter), and a bottle of Mauby “Obama” wine….yes, the label actually SAYS Obama….a big O and a little “bama”.

I’m connected via Skype to a friend of mine as a “Satellite Location” for this electoral party.

So, that’s my setup. If you like, please leave a comment with your your “election central” setup.

More to come

Oh, and guys? This one’s for Tim.

Well, I can’t sleep, I don’t know about you. I’ve been up staring at Nate Silver’s stuff on FiveThirtyEight, listening to Chris, Keith, Rachel (anyone notice how pessimistic Rachel has become? One might almost think that she’s a closet McCain fan). I mus say I’m not very encouraged by Rachel these days…I hope she’s just being pessimistic in an effort to get out the vote. I’ve gotten to know all of my sites (HuffPo, DailyKos, FiveThirtyEight, RCP, BO.com, Politico, The NYT, FirstRead, LateNightPizzas (what’s THAT?) pretty well over this campaign. I’m still struck by the same question, as I am every time I contemplate this election. Why the F$$$ would ANYONE vote for that Buffoon and his Barbie Doll? Lately, Rachel has described him as “eerily calm and happy”, as if he KNOWS the fix is in. I’m not spewing sour grapes when I say that with all of the predictions and forecasts, I can see NO reasonable way for McCain to win this thing short of threading the needle so perfectly that it would have to be engineered. As I type this, Johnny McPTSD is doing his last rally tonite (Midnight in Arizona), and Caribou Barbie is holding one as well. Barack is going home. Tomorrow, the Putz and Ditz team will be going all over the country again.

I’m worried about voter turnout, I’m worried about irregularities that will prevent voters who want to vote from voting, their votes from being counted, and all other voter suppression techniques. I’m worried about the rethug GOTV effort, which Rachel hinted tonight was RNC based (NOT McCain Campating based…Sorry Nate, but those “empty” McCain headquarters and field offices may be a PLOY to lull the dems into a false sense of security….and I’ll bet BO knows it. Rachel is talking about a GOTV effort by the rethugs in the RNC that will DWARF the Obama effort….I’m concerned about that. Voter turnout, so imortant in this election, also worries me. Will we perform as we should? I rather dread going to vote and standing in line, mostly because I want to get to the Obama Headquarters and go canvassing. I would rather not be late for that effort, but I fully realize that my most important effort today is to VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. And I will, no matter HOW long it takes to stand in line at my precinct.

Tonight, I’ll be glued to the television set watching Virginia, Indiana, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I’ll be checking the numbers, doing the math, watching Nate’s site and hanging out with my Widgets. When the race is called, I’ll post it here, more for posterity than anything else, as I’m sure all of you PizzaFolk will be busy dealing with the results in your own way. I do wonder what will happen if McPTSD wins. Will it be close enough to warrant an investigation? Will the dems even have the stomach for that? It will take an amazing set of cooincdences (or, perhaps, a “Series of Unfortunate Events”) for this joker and his bimbo to actually win, but Rachel is hammering us with “It’s not even close to in the bag for either of them”

I have to stop right here, and offer profound condolences to the Obama family on the passing of Toot, Barack’s beloved grandmother. She was the cornerstone of his family, and, in a profound manner, was responsible for all that Barack has become. We honor her memory at LNP, and we hope that Barack finds comfort in the fact that her mail-in vote, certified on October 27th, WILL count in the election.

There’s an ugly story out there about the California Republican Committee having filed suit in federal court today claiming impropriety in Barak’s use of the campaign plane to fly to Hawaii to see his grandm other. What nonsense. Do they really expect a presidential candidate at this stage of the race to fly on a commercial jet, with all of the security and privacy that requires? Don’t forget, he took a small press corps, Secret Service people, and all manner of paraphenalia with him. Gimmie a break.

Is it me or is Brad Blakeman one of the lowest forms of life on the planet. He just shouldn’t be allowed on TV after some of those remarks.

Note that here in Northern Michgan, the Rev. Wright ad has been running nonstop, about every 10 minutes, all night. How disgusting can they get? I had a long talk with someone from Germany today, whom I met while phone banking at the Obama Headquarters. She expressed admiration for BO, and admiration for the US for going so far with him. She made it known in NO uncertian terms that the world, overwhelmingly for Barack, is watching the US closely in this election, and in her estimation, that our national prestige, and the world view of the USA depends HEAVILY on our electing Barack. She found it very hard, as do MANY of her compatriots, to understand how we could even CONSIDER electing McPTSD and his bimbo. I told her that, if we don’t elect Barack, I would be ashamed to have anyone find out I am an American citizen. I certianly won’t be associated with the dullards and wackos that would have elected that crap.

Well, on to getting ready for the election. I sure hope I’m back later to announce some happy news.
